Eynes, Lubov Ivanovna Born in 1958 in Uelen Lubov Eynes is a Chukchi woman, the
daughter of engraver Galina Tynatval. She studied with her mother, and
has worked at the Uelen Carving Workshop since 1980. Her works can be
found in the Chukotka District Museum (Anadyr), and the Museum of Uelen
Carving Workshop (Uelen). |

Creature Taking Man’s Soul
The Chukchi believe that the spirit that takes a person’s soul when
they die is half man and half walrus. Lubov Eynes conceived of this image
after dreaming of a half walrus spirit. Shortly after completing the print
her twin sister died. |

Il'key, Elena Tukkaevna Born in 1947 in Uelen, Elena Il’key is Chukchi. She is the daughter
of the famous carver Tukkay and worked at the Uelen Carving Workshop
from 1965 to 1996. Since 1996 she has worked at home. Her works can be
found in the Museum of Folk Art ( Moscow), Chukotka District Museum (Anadyr),
and the Museum of Uelen Carving Workshop (Uelen ). |

Ergiro, Marina Alexsandrovna
Engraver Marina Alexandrovna Ergiro was born in 1963 in Uelen. She
is Chukchi, granddaughter of the honored carver of Russia, Tukkay, and
has studied with engravers, Elena II’Key and Galina Irgutegina.
She has worked at the Uelen workshop since 1982 and has works displayed
at the Museum of Uelen Carving Workshop (Uelen).

Irgutegina, Galina Ivanovna
Born in 1945. Galina Irgutegina has received the Russian national award
of “Honored Artist of Russia”. Gallina Irgutegina is a Chukchi.
She worked at the Uelen Carving Workshop from 1967 to 1996. From 1996
has worked at home in Uelen. Her works can be found in Museum of Folk
Art ( Moscow), State Museum of Oriental Art ( Moscow), Chukotka District
Museum (Anadyr), and the Museum of Uelen Carving Workshop (Uelen ).

Demon/Monster
This image comes from a Chukchi legend about a powerful shaman who decides
to marry off his beautiful daughter. Suitors gather from all around, including
this monster. The shaman tells the suitors that they must demonstrate their
best skill and the monster decides to play the drum and sing. His music
is so bad that he throws his drum and beater down in disgust. |

Born in 1967 in Uelen, male, Chukchi son of the engraver Elena Il’key
grandson of the carver Tukkay, studied with the engraver Vasily Emrykain
and also at the Abramozevo Art College, Has worked at the Uelen Carving
workshop since 1984. His work can be found at Chukotka District Museum
(Anadyr), and the Museum of Uelen Carving Workshop (Uelen).
